I presume that most religious people will say that humans have free will. After all God gave humans free choice to do good or evil. And supposedly we have a choice in what we believe in.

Still an overwhelming majority of all religious people have the same religion one of their parents have, or the local religion. I don’t have statistics of this, but am willing to guess that this applies to more than 95 % of all religious people. It applies to absolutely all people I know personally. It seems that the popularity of religion is based upon childhood indoctrination, rather than free will.

Most people are willing to believe that our surroundings will affect our choices in life, for example a commercial.
People who consider free will an illusion, often agree that ALL our actions and thoughts are determined by our genes and the effect our surroundings have on us. What we think is right or wrong shows strong relation with the time and place we live in.

Just like an apple doesn’t use it’s free will to fall to the ground, we don’t use our free will to stop smoking, object capital punishment, become gay or choose to eat Froot Loops in the morning.

More controversial is the idea that murder and practising paedophilia is not a free choice. However that doesn’t mean that we should abolish the juridical system. Naturally the laws and punishment in most countries are there mainly to have a deterrent effect and to physically keep the offender locked up. A misconception is to call free will the power to override instincts.

it is very much an illusion. even the idea of a "free will" was cut and pasted from what we were taught at a young age. every thought we have is from what we observe. we arent born with the knowledge of the world. we only learn a small portion that our community accepts. but no one seems to realize that, they are a bi product of they’re childhood. i myself am still in highschool, and have experienced a wide variety of cultures, since my famiy tends to move when we get bored in a certain place. i realized some time ago, that al religions serve a similare purpose. to control the masses from hurting themselfs and others. and to give hope after death. im an athiest, and believe that when we die, our brain and all its workings including thought process will just "shut off" the idea of the soul, and its "free will" came from not understanding the mind, and human nature.
