I have been smoking for about twelve years and it’s been exactly a year since I have stopped. I have to say, even after a year of being smoke free, I have enjoyed smoking and I still do not look at it as being a bad thing or an addiction. I also do not want to advocate that smoking as good or bad and I do not want to push my views on anyone out there I believe that it is up to each individual to decide if he or she wants to smoke or not. This is just my story on what I did to quit smoking.

Over the years I have tried a number of methods to quit smoking I have tried nicotine gum, patches, pills etc and nothing worked I always went back to smoking and the reason for that was is that I was not prepared or ready to give up smoking as I was enjoying it and did not want to quit.

Now we can move on onto the first step of quitting and it is that you have to want to quit otherwise forget about it. Well if you thought about quitting or contemplating about it you can say you have made the first step. Now you have to create a “want” inside you. This is not an easy step and you will have to do some work on it.

The way I managed to create a desire to quit is using the following method. Every night when you get into bet come up with one reason why you want to smoke and one reason why you don’t and keep doing it every night in about a week or so you will run out of reasons why you would want to smoke and the only reasons you will be finding is reasons why to stop. So now this is an important part once you ran out of reasons to continue smoking keep going every night come up with another reason why you want to stop. In about two weeks after that you will start feeling a very weird feeling like you not enjoying smoking that much anymore and it is really time to quit (this is a good feeling) in some cases you may actually feel repulsion to smoking (this is what I felt).

Once you get this feeling you are ready to stop smoking. Now you have to set a date when you actually will stop this date should probably be about two or three weeks away. Now once the date is set get on with your normal life as you usually do and keep coming up with reasons why you should stop smoking every night.

By following the above by the time the date which you have set arrives you will most you should be felling like you can’t wait for this date to arrive because you had enough of smoking and there is no more reasons why you should continue and so many reasons why you should.

So once the date has arrived have a smoke before you go to bed probably have a few one after another so you feel a bit sick and then go to bed and in your mind recall all the reasons why you should stop and after wards just say to yourself something along the lines finally I don’t want to smoke anymore. And that’s it when you wake up you will feel quite good and in my case I did not had any desire to smoke and have been smoke free ever since.

Now I will give you few pointers which helped some of my friends to quit.

If after the date you feel like smoking do the following. Say to yourself ok I will not smoke for one day and then I will smoke tomorrow. When tomorrow comes and you still want to smoke repeat the above and don’t smoke for another day. In a few days the cravings should disappear.

It is hard to say why some people want to smoke and why some people what to give up. For me smoking was something I enjoyed and the only reason why I decide to quit is moving forward I do want to be healthy and be there for people I love.
