Warning – Stop Smoking Drug May Be Hazerdous your health

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Smoking is its own punishment.

But many smokers are doubly punished these days with 1) a smoking cessation drug that could actually be worse for you than smoking, and 2) a new vaccine recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It’s enough to make you stop smoking just to get these ruthless drug dealers off your back! The Associated Press reported that the pneumococcal vaccine protects against some strains of pneumococcal bacteria, but in the 25 years since its first year, it has not been very effective in preventing pneumonia or to rule out diseases pneumococcal disease in people whose immune system is weakened.

Okay, I get it – it is an ineffective vaccine is somewhat effective if you have a strong immune system. What kind of makes you wonder if immune function is strong does all the heavy lifting in this equation.

A panel of the Advisory Committee on Immunization has recently recommended that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should encourage all smokers to get pneumococcal vaccine. The CDC is expected to sign for the recommendation. Then stand aside and let the trucks rolling through the next vaccine.

And as usual, some drug manufacturers giant will make a small tidy package to this recommendation questionable. And the winner is. . . Merck & Co. – manufacturers of Pneumovax, which costs about $ 30 per dose.

Meanwhile, over at Pfizer, things are not so rosy.

A few weeks ago, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) has announced a grim milestone: The number of serious drug reactions and deaths reported to the FDA has established a new record in the first quarter of 2008 – nearly 21,000 Severe reactions have been reported and more than 4,800 dead.

Two factors explain these high figures: 1) batches of contaminated blood thinner heparin imported from China, and 2) the Pfizer drug Chantix to stop smoking.

In previous e-Alerts I’ve talked about the evils associated with Chantix. Some side effects noted on the website of Chantix include nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness (which would not be dizzy after the first four side-effects?), Chest pain, depression and hypertension .

Earlier this year, the FDA issued a warning about “reports of suicidal thoughts and aggressive and erratic behavior among patients who took Chantix.”

Apparently, this warning was right on the money.

ISMP notes that not only account for 1001 Chantix reports on serious (the largest number of any nonprescription drug), but the number of serious reactions linked to the use of Chantix was higher than all 10 brand name drugs better name for the sale of handsets.

A report by the Associated Press included this interesting note: “Officials are not sure whether reports are up because problems are getting worse, or simply due to greater awareness about drug safety .

Riiiight. This is not the drug that is the problem is the realization that drugs are a problem – that’s the problem. Got it.

The announcement ISMP urged the FDA to warn Chantix users with force they could face blackouts – a side effect serious enough when you are driving or flying. Therefore pilots FAA has already banned use of Chantix.

A spokesman for Pfizer told the AP that the results of clinical trials show the drug’s benefits “clearly outweigh its risks.” Or – in other words – our medicines are not as dangerous as smoking, which represents more than 400,000 Americans died each year.

So the moral of this story is that if you smoke, chew or dip. . . STOP. Treat yourself to 3 days and get rid of this habit. Stay away from junk like Chantix, it’s just another drug to replace a drug with side effects to replace the side effects.

Why Should You Stop Smoking Cigarette

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

A loser once said ‘To stop smoking cigarette is not difficult; I have done it several times!’ Facts – The cigarette is actually a carefully designed product and designed in such a way as to make the smoking process as palatable as possible. Also, the tobacco leaf part of the cigarette is actually composed of two main leaf types, one which has higher nicotine content than the other. These are therefore basically very tricky ways so the cigarette can have a magnet-like effect on you, the steel smoker. It thus proves that you are only wise to stop smoking cigarette.

Even though volumes of literature are available on how and why to stop smoking cigarette seems like it still never inspires enough. It is alarming that the world has tobacco as the third reason for highest number of deaths! An estimated one in every five deaths in the world occurs due to tobacco use.

The good news is however slowly coming in majority of developed countries, health and beauty consciousness is pushing people to give up the dreadful practice.Smoking is the single biggest avoidable menace to good health. It causes infertility and impotence besides narrowing and hardening arteries.

The impish act is also responsible for paralytic stroke, brain haemorrhage, angina, heart attack, chronic bronchitis, ulcers, cancer, etc. Nicotine is a drug that is present naturally in the tobacco leaf. In higher doses, nicotine like any other addictive drugs including heroin and cocaine is a recipe to kill. Nicotine has a powerful effect on the brain and the central nervous system. It causes an increase in the heart rate and in the rate of breathing – thereby making the heart work harder.

Smoking is killing more people every year than all other drugs and alcohol habits combined.Non-smokers who are exposed to smoke suffer more than the smokers themselves because of passive smoking. The spreading of this fact is partially helping by forcing smokers to stop smoking cigarette among crowds or gatherings.

Nicotine is a harmful drug that takes you high and then drops you flat. It makes you want more. It gets you hooked. Then you get into real trouble. Trouble such as it makes the brain tissues sluggish, dull, numb and inactive making the person incompetent for brain work. Finally, there can be no more affirmative ways of explaining the reasons for anyone to stop smoking cigarette.

Stop smoking today with the help of Smoke Deter Herbel Supplment.

How Hypnotherapy Helps People To Stop Smoking

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

As any smoker knows and anybody else can see, smoking is an extraordinarily difficult thing to give up.

More addictive than heroin we hear, or I’ve tried but….from a friend who gave up before, as they pick up a new cigarette.

It is not only the physical addiction, but also the social aspect of the habit that is difficult for the smoker to break.

The routine becomes part of the fabric of their day, be it stepping outside for a first cigarette, sitting in a pub with a pint and beer and smoke with a friend, or just the daily chat with the friendly tobacconist: once these moments are woven into the fabric of our lives the habit becomes more and more difficult to break.

The medical profession advise a wide range of treatments that should help you to quit smoking, mainly related to drugs and other prescription items.

While the profit model for the suppliers of this range of patches, gums, and replacement therapies is easy to see, the effectiveness for the average smoker-to-quit is less clear.

In many cases the addiction to nicotine by cigarette is only replaced to addiction to nicotine by patch, and the underlying reasons for the smoker’s wanting to pick up their next cigarette remain un-altered.

And as a smoker finds them falling straight back onto habits that they know they would prefer to have let behind them but seem unable to, their belief in their own self determination and personal choice can start to wain.

And what is going on behind all of this? While the smoker ‘decides’ to quit the habit using their conscious mind, it is the unconscious mind that each time overrides this choice, and sees you reaching for yet another cigarette.

So how can you go about translating the choices made by your conscious mind to the sub-conscious one and making those choices stick?

Well one route to altering those decisions that we keep on making is by talking directly to the subconscious a skill known as hypnotherapy.

The smoker listens to the voice of the hypnotherapist, and becomes relaxed.  They sometimes fall asleep or become drowsy, but equally often feel themselves to be fully awake throughout.

The hypnotherapist makes what is known as ’suggestions’ to the smoker, and it is these that sinking more deeply into the smokers mind start to effect the real decision that the smoker makes at let’s call it ‘next cigarette time’.

Oddly enough the soon-to-be ex smoker finds themself in a strange situation:

-Their desire for that next cigarette is not what it used to be.

-The reasons for quitting that they have understood for so long, yet been unable to act on seem more important, and less easy to suspend from the mind for those critical moments prior to taking action.

-The strength of resolve that had previously crumbled so easily seems for no apparent reason to return.

How easy is it in this situation to feel  braver than before?

How easy to actually take the action that you had always hoped you would, and say No thanks I’m a non-smoker.

Surprised?  You probably will be, but that’s hypnotherapy to stop smoking!

Acupressure to Stop Smoking

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Acupressure is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that can be used to alleviate the symptoms of many illnesses and disorders. By putting pressure on certain points throughout the body, corresponding to the meridians or energy centers as understood by ancient Chinese medicine, energy blockages are removed, allowing the body to function in optimal health.

This approach may prove beneficial to smoking cessation in a number of ways. By strengthening the body’s natural processes acupressure may help flush out toxins, thereby alleviating the discomfort of withdrawal from nicotine or other harmful substances. It promotes relaxation, which addresses any underlying stress that could be contributing to your smoking habit. There are also specific points which are thought to correspond to the suppression of compulsive appetites, such as overeating or smoking.

Several such points are located in the ear, and therefore require a more specialized treatment approach than other more easily accessed points on the body. For this reason, as when dealing with any serious health condition, it is best to consult with a professional practitioner. Treatment generally does not take long before results are noticeable, and the lack of side effects is a popular feature of this type of smoking cessation method.

Acupressure has been found to show rapid, lasting and impressive results, particularly in helping people get through the difficult nicotine withdrawal stage with fewer unpleasant side effects than usual. In some cases treatment has even resulted in making cigarettes taste unpleasant, making the process of quitting easier. It has been used successfully where other methods have failed.

With the many different forms of smoking cessation available, acupressure may not be the one that first comes to mind. However, the results show that it should be an option you keep in mind, particularly if you have tried other methods with little success. Stimulating the body’s own natural healing processes, and providing relief from the unpleasant sensations typically experienced during an attempt to quit smoking, make acupressure a viable alternative for many.

Explore your options in stop smoking methods and products before choosing the strategy with the best chance of working for you. Remember, your desire to change is key, so start by becoming very clear about your goals, your reasons for quitting, and the tools you will use along the way. A well designed plan is your best chance for success, and is worth spending some time and thought developing in order to be prepared for the obstacles and challenges you will likely encounter. With the right amount of organization and support, you are off to a great start and can begin looking forward to reaching those all-important milestones, one hour, one day, one week at a time. Start taking steps towards better health today – you and your loved ones deserve it.

Take The Edge Off Stopping Smoking!

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Each and every year in my private practice in Oxford, I see hundreds of people wishing to stop smoking. Along with doing Hypnotherapy with them and teaching them Self Hypnosis, I also give them a few tips to make sure that the transition into a happy and content non-smoker is a happy one. I recommend that the tips below be used following a session of Hypnosis or the use of a high-quality Stop Smoking Hypnosis recording.

So if you have picked your day to quit, you’re ready to begin. Here are my tips on becoming a happy and content non-smoker.

1.Drink plenty of water. By increasing the amount of water that you drink you will be increasing your chances of an easier transition to being a non-smoker. The nicotine (the drug which you are addicted to) that is in your body needs to be flushed out and an increase in the amount of water that you drink helps you to do just that. It also hydrates your body, which in turn will give you a greater sense of wellbeing and allow you to feel healthier – this could benefit you if you tended to feel a bit crabby after giving up previously.

2.Do something different and keep busy. In those first vital days, make sure that you keep busy, and do stuff that you like doing as this will keep you occupied and less likely to think about smoking. Maybe spend some time with your friends or family and go out for the day. To make sure that your habit stays broken, it may be helpful to break your routine for a few days. During their day a smoker will associate a lot of things with his or her smoking, such as, having a beer, driving the car and after having sex. Still do all of these things, however do them differently! For example – have your beer at a smoke free bar for a few days!

3.Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Just like drinking more water, eating healthily allows you to feel healthier and gives you a greater sense of wellbeing. This is great as in this frame of mind and body you are more likely to succeed as you are giving yourself more to loose! Try it – you will feel great!

So there you have it. These are not all of my tips; however they will certainly help to take the edge of giving up smoking for you. Good luck and enjoy your new healthier lifestyle!

Richard MacKenzie is an expert on Self Hypnosis. He is also the bestselling author or a book called Self-Change Hypnosis.

How to Avoid Weight Gain When Stopping Smoking

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Fear of gaining weight is a barrier for many when it comes to quitting smoking. However, with proper planning and the use of some of the different products available, weight gain is not an inevitable side effect. Understanding the quitting process and coming up with a detailed plan to deal with the challenges that arise will help prevent undesirable side effects.

One reason weight gain occurs during an attempt to stop smoking is due to the desire for something to replace cigarettes. This may occur at a psychological level, as the need for rewards or treats, or as a behavioral issue, feeling at a loss without the action or activity of smoking. The need to snack may also occur in response to the unpleasant feelings associated with nicotine withdrawal. Being prepared for all of these possibilities means anticipating their occurrence and having coping strategies ready so you are not taken by surprise.

Plan ahead to have healthy snacks on hand, as well as plenty of drinking water, and turn to these when you experience cravings or the restless need for something to do with your hands. Try to avoid trading one bad habit for another, by not including foods that are high in sugar, salt or fat in these replacement choices. If you feel the need for treats, try to find alternatives that will not be costly to your health. A massage, a nice bath, fresh flowers, or a new outfit are some ideas for rewarding yourself in positive ways without harmful consequences.

Similarly, you can work on learning to replace your smoking habit with other, healthier behaviors. To help fill the gaps in your day, take up walking or jogging, a new sport, or some other form of physical activity. This will help keep you occupied, help you get in shape and lose weight, keep your appetite under control, and assuming you choose an activity you enjoy, give you something to look forward to. Try involving a friend or pet in order to get even more out of your time.

Smoking cessation products can also be useful in helping you avoid weight gain during withdrawal, by reducing the unpleasant side effects including cravings that may prompt you to overeat. Nicotine replacement therapies, hypnosis, acupressure and other diverse methods of stopping smoking all can play a role in helping you overcome destructive habits, and find healthier ways of living. Meditation is another drug-free way to replace your addiction with a greater source of inner peace and reflection. Strategies that help reduce stress are useful in a number of ways, and should be a part of any stop smoking plan.

Explore the many options available in order to make your plans to quit smoking a reality, without suffering any unwanted weight gain. With a little planning and preparation, you will be well on your way to looking and feeling great.

Stop Smoking Programs – What Should I Look For When Picking A Quit Smoking Program?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

When you are considering a program to quit smoking, it is important to understand some of the methods in which it touches base on, helping you understand the problems that you will face when you give up smoking and how to cope with them.

Not only is your own will and determination important, but the caring and support of those around you when things get rough. Some of the best stop-smoking programs include counseling, both individually or in groups, and therapy.

The therapy is different from counseling as it is in reference to the individual and how they are responding to quitting smoking. It is decided on the basis of an individual’s health, for which a smoker is required to undergo a full medical check up.

Most of these stop-smoking programs are normally spread over a period of 2 weeks. During this period, trained counselors conduct anywhere from four to seven sessions, the duration of which ranges from 20 to 30 minutes. The duration of the total program or the sessions can be modified based on the needs of the participating group and the individual involved. The programs are invariably led by people who have had considerable experience in assisting people give up smoking.

One excellent group that runs such programs is Nicotine Anonymous, which works on the same principles as Alcoholics Anonymous. Like AA, smokers can attend all meetings free of cost and have a continuous support group on a weekly basis. The American Lung Association, Health Department, and American Cancer Society also sponsor such free programs and support groups for smokers who are trying to quit smoking.

There are so many programs to choose from in regard to quitting smoking, it is best to research how legitimate they are before joining. It is never easy to quit anything, but smoking seems to be one of the worst. Looking around at all the programs, realize what you will be up against – being honest with yourself – while also looking at the options should be carefully done before beginning.

It is pretty hard to be objective about an addictive drug that is present in the body about three or four days after quitting the nicotine, but to be truthful and honest about what is going to happen and what it will take to successfully quit is what it takes.

However, before joining any such program, you need to do some research. You must avoid programs that are not ethical, or programs that use injections or pills as the only method of treatment. The programs that refuse to disclose details of the chemicals used in injections must surely be shunned. So should be those programs that charge high fees or promise instant results.

And most of all, you must remember that it takes time and patience to give up smoking. Most smokers have been at it for quite awhile, and won’t be able to quit overnight. But once you do, food will taste better and your sense of smell will be back to normal. Shortness of breath will be gone, and you will return to better health. Join a program that is well planned and willing to help you on a long-term basis for a major future goal.
