Top Five Ways to Quit Smoking

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Not only does smoking affect the health of those that smoke, it affects those around the smoker who are surrounded by the second hand smoke. Quitting smoking can be difficult but it is a goal that many who conquer it are glad to be finished the bad habit – regardless of the difficult measures that it took to quit the habit.

Zyban is the number one prescription drug to help smoker’s quit. It is in the family of antidepressants and is used for treatment in depression as well as aiding in the process of quitting smoking. Zyban may take weeks in order to become an effective aid in quitting smoking, and is often prescribed to be taken a week before quitting smoking. The pills are taken three times daily for the first three days, than once daily for two days.

The nicotine patch is available at the local drug store for about twenty dollars for a package of four to six patches. The patch is to be adhered to the skin and nicotine is introduced to the body through the transdermal backing on the patch. It is important to remember to avoid smoking while on the patch. Smoking while on the patch could create dangerous side effects.

Nicorette, the stop smoking gum can help control the cravings. Although it is a gum, Nicorette comes with indication to bite the gum twice, than chew the gum to release the nicotine into the saliva. This should be repeated every minute for thirty minutes and than a new piece of gum should be used. Nicorette works best when combined with other non-medical quit smoking therapy and comes in two dosages, two and four milligrams.

Champix is the newest prescription drug to assist in the quitting smoking process and is under the classification of smoking cessation therapies. Champix works within the brain to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms that come with quitting smoking. Like Zyban, Champix therapy should be started one to two weeks before the actual quit date.

Many smokers choose to use natural methods to quit smoking. Herbs and supplements are available at many of the local health food stores. Herbs combined with therapies such as massage, hypnotism and acupuncture can supplement the herbal therapy in the quest to become a non-smoker.

Deciding on one method of quitting smoking is important. A smoker who is trying to quit smoking should not be doing so without consulting a health professional if using pharmaceutical intervention – and two smoking cessation therapies should not be used at the same time. Using two methods at the same time can cause dangerous nicotine levels within the body and lead to serious side effects.

Willpower is necessary, regardless of the medication or supplement chosen to quit smoking. Smoking has been a part of every smoker’s lives and has become integral in their daily routine. With smoking cessation therapy and intent to quit smoking and be on the road to better health, a brighter, smoke free future can be in the horizon!

Five Top Reasons to Quit Smoking

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

The thought of quitting smoking produces a paralyzing fear in some people. They know they want to quit, but the comforting effect of inhaling smoke along with the nicotine is not easily given up. Many people do want to quit smoking cigarettes for various reasons, although these reasons are not sufficient motivation to quit. Many who smoke will always find a reason to smoke if they want to. Listed below are five reasons to quit smoking.

The first reason to quit is that you may live longer and live healthier. This is absolutely true as the days string together and you have a successful recovery from using nicotine and/or other tobacco products. Although no one can forecast the future and truly know how long we will live, quitting smoking may give you the edge you need to live a longer and healthier life.

Your children wanting you to quit is seen as the second reason. Quitting tobacco products and smoking is actually one of the greatest things you could do for your family. You could be a role model to your children and your grandchildren; someone they would want to emulate. When an adult in the family does not smoke the children are much less apt to. If your children do not smoke as an adolescent or teenager they are much less apt to as an adult.

The third reason to quit smoking is that your breathing will become much easier and you will regain your lost energy. Both of these are true providing you follow a regime of psychological and behavioral changes throughout your quitting process.

The fourth reason is you will have a much greater chance of lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke, or cancer by quitting. This is all true, although you will never regain the pure body you had before you started smoking, stopping now significantly reduces these risks the longer you do not smoke.

The fifth and final reason to stop smoking is that the cost of cigarettes is becoming too expensive. This is very true and you can see it on a daily basis. One more cost of smoking relates to the medical costs associated with usage. Quitting may cut the medical costs significantly over time. Add the two together and there is quite a sum to pay if you continue smoking.

Do you really want to quit or are you ambivalent about it? Deciding that you want to quit smoking and making a commitment to stop will provide motivation to follow through. The five listed reasons are just a few known for quiting smoking. You can use any reason that means something to you to quit. The road can go uphill for only so long, then the process of quitting will become easier. Make your commitment to stop today—you will be happy you did.

You really want to quit smoking right now but you don’t know how to. Look at a new program that will help you quit smoking the way you want to.

Five Easy Ways to Stop Smoking

Friday, July 9th, 2010

When it comes to smoking it is important to realise that there is no quick and easy method of giving up. However, there are some new ways to stop smoking which can allow you to overcome some of the side effects when quitting smoking or increase willpower, causing the struggle to give up to get a little less stressful.

Herbal non smoking aids can be used to replace nicotine in the body and allow you to cut down your nicotine addiction slowly but surely. The benefits of this have been seen by many people, but like many other stop smoking aids, it does not work for everybody. Hypnosis can allow you to interact with your senses by using positive affirmations and suggestions and enables you to deal with all the emotional and psychological aspects of smoking rather than the physical effects, meaning that once you have given up, it should stay that way. Drugs can be obtained via prescription as a last resort to stopping smoking. This can include antidepressants which can reduce the smoker’s interest in cigarettes. However, due to being such new treatments, the long term effects of a few of these drugs are not yet known. Inhalers and sprays are now being made widely available to help smokers give up due to their ability to clear clogged nasal and throat passages, a common side effect when quitting smoking. Subliminal messaging can be used to align your subconscious mind with your conscious goals and therefore greatly increase willpower. A subliminal stop smoking CD can be used as an alternative to other smoking aids and significantly reduce cravings, allowing you to give up smoking in a slightly easier way and help you to quit forever.
