Some Common Side Effects of Stopping Smoking

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Quitting smoking is probably one of the hardest things you may have to do your entire life. It is the nicotine that makes it hard. This chemical is addictive and just like any addictive drug, cessation leads to withdrawal and your body wanting the drug so much that a number of symptoms, or side effects will develop. The side effects of stopping smoking are difficult, but they only last for the first 3 days. After this it becomes an easier task. However, dealing with this 72 hour period and finishing it is the hardest part where most people fail when they attempt to stop.

The side effects of stopping smoking cover a variety of mental and physical symptoms which are manifested in an attempt to get you to light up another cigarette. You must resist the temptation no matter how bad the symptoms get. The first thing you will notice is that you will start feeling depressed about not having that cigarette around when you need it; before you could turn to the cigarette to help you get through almost any situation. This depression will lead into an anxiety in which you will develop jitters and fears about not being able to handle daily life without a smoke.

You used to hang out in certain places with certain friends but after cessation you will have to become a loner to some degree. As a result, another side effect of stopping smoking will kick in known as boredom and loneliness. Worst of all though, there is another side effect, but this one will affect those around you faster than it will affect you personally. You will become more irritable, hot tempered and ready to snap at anyone for any little thing. Chances are that you will not even realize that you are being irritable. Just remind yourself and those around you that after 72 hours, things should start to calm down and ask them to bear with you until you get there; they will understand and support you while you quit smoking.

Are Cigarette Side Effects A Reason For Concern? Kill The Urge by Quitting Smoking

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

How many inner dialogs have you had with yourself about your smoking addiction? How many times have you complained to family and friends that you want to end the habit but seem to continue to smoke away despite the health risks and the cost? And how many methods have you tried that just flopped? If you are like most people struggling with smoking, you will remember such shattered hopes and may have felt nothing will really come through for you. Unless you tried hypnosis to stop smoking, you may have been right.

If you sincerely want to stop smoking, hypnosis is the sensible choice for true cures. Hypnotherapy to quit smoking can address the most significant reasons that keep you smoking as well as giving you the tools and guidance to be successful once and for all. This is not a mere parlor trick, but a proven treatment approved by the AMA since 1958, and one with accreditation and a strong code of ethics.

Hypnosis does not change your moral values and a certified professional hypnotherapist will respect your privacy and rights like any other medical professional. You do want one who is verified by the National Guild of Hypnotists and who supports their stringent ethical and professional standards. Included in their code is putting the mental and physical welfare of clients uppermost. They also defend clients from mental, physical or verbal abuse, and refer any client as appropriate.

A trained hypnotherapist has the skills to address problem behavior, and hypnotherapy to stop smoking is the second most frequent type they practice. Using methods that are considered state of the art, which may include the precision of NLP, hypnosis and the ongoing extra support of self-hypnosis stop smoking CD’s as well as any prescription modalities a PCP might also dictate for a patient. Using hypnosis does not mean other measures are prohibited, but they may not be needed at all.

The reason that professionally used hypnosis to quit smoking is the most effective method to attain success is that it addresses the three basic issues in smoking. No method can truly work that does not address each issue totally and correct the problems each causes. Most people think that the physical addiction to nicotine is the most important aspect and the most predominant problem, but this is simply not true. If the addiction to the chemical called nicotine were the only reason for failure, most smokers would not fail multiple times in their efforts to end smoking for good.

Yes, nicotine is a terribly addictive substance and for most smokers the physical need is very real and there are withdrawal sensations that are also real. But did you understand these last only a short time? In fact, every bit of nicotine is metabolized out of the system in just three days or less! For many smokers, it is the fear of withdrawal discomforts and not the reality that causes the most distress and which may prevent even trying. Yet quitting without training has an average 5% rate of success! Stop smoking hypnosis reduces fear of withdrawal problems and blunts the effect of any that do occur.

Another component of smoking cigarettes is that it provides relaxation; just as using a pacifier tranquilizes babies. Many people treat anxiety and stress with some form of oral soothing like smoking cigarettes or eating. Hypnotic relaxation can replace the comfort factor received from smoking cigarettes, which reduces the insistent urges and produces the benefits of quitting instead. The mind can be trained to substitute the same perceptions from other activities that are beneficial, not harmful. Neurolinguistic techniques can teach the brain to remove any linkage between smoking cigarettes and comfort.

Lastly, part of the smoking habit is plain old Pavlovian habit formation to stimuli. Smokers learn to link smoking with certain activities, from the movie cliche of smoking immediately after physical relations to automatically lighting a cigarette while consuming alcohol or viewing television or chatting on the phone. Here hypnosis to stop smoking can permanently delete the association, and when the link is no longer there, there will be no stimulus to light up when the coffee is poured or the cocktail is served. The mind is conditioned to associate good things with the former triggers, or to recall the helpful effects of quitting or the created by having the smoke.

A highly qualified hypnotherapist will use both positive and negative associations to replace conditioned associations with smoking, selecting those most compelling for an individual client. Hypnosis to quit smoking cigarettes is the only technique that can custom fit the treatment to each of the three reasons for smoking and eliminate them. Anyone knows quitting requires support, but only smoking cessation programs using hypnotherapy effectively make you equipped to support yourself at any time.
