“Eden Prairie Today” Wednesday, April 8 webcast — Smokers feeling cigarette tax increase

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Smokers who thought having a fellow smoker in the White House might keep cigarette prices down got a rude awakening April 1, when the federal tax on a pack of smokes jumped from $.39 to $1.01. Officials are hoping the largest cigarette tax increase ever will prompt people to quit, but smokers are feeling the pain until they can find the will to quit. Jane Korn, medical director for health promotion and chronic disease for the Minnesota Department of Health, said the number of people of who quit smoking as a result of the tax increase should be significant. We are hoping this will result in 14000 fewer smokers, she said. At Randys Bobby & Steves on Singletree Lane, the price of a pack of Marlboros jumped to $5.95 in early March, said Kelle Romstad, a cashier at the service center. She has noticed a trend in the way smokers are reacting to the higher prices: shock, followed by disgust. Kevin McGrath, who stopped into Randys Bobby & Steves for a pack of Newports last week, said he felt like the tax targets the poor. There are many options for people who want to quit smoking, Korn said. Theres a list of resources on the MnDOHs website, but the best one to call is Quitplan, Korn said, because it can match people to the cessation program that works with their health insurance. Let’s check out the weather underground forecast, do a brief correction and get out here. Correction to yesterday’s webcast: The school board did not meet last night. And the Chamber of Commerce just

Stop Smoking Tips For Advanced Smokers

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Your decision to give up cigarettes at this advanced stage of cigarette smoking seems to be a desperate decision and there must be strong reasons for that. You have increased awareness within you. You are convinced that you need to give up smoking once and for all. Still, you agree that you can’t resist the sight and taste of the burning cylinder.

You have to reverse this cynical situation. The first and the foremost weapon in this difficult yet possible endeavor, is your will power. There is no other potent force that can be of more assistance to you in this critical juncture.

You need to take out the feeling from your mind that smoking is associated with pleasure. You as a smoker have a peculiar type of mood swing. The cravings for the smoke give rise to irritability, stress and headache.

Such a situation can be reversed only by going to the root cause of your smoking. What are those unconscious conflicts that stop you from stopping smoking? A dent has to be made through your conflicts and find the way to weaken them.

For this you need to attend special smoking cessation classes and your involvement with such efforts should be on day to day basis. It has also been found possible to break the die-hard habit of smoking with hypnosis. Well, some hypnotists have claimed to have helped smokers to quit smoking within 48 hours.

At this stage, nicotine is in total control of you. So if the smoking habit is given up abruptly, it could result in sudden weight gain. This is a proven fact. But you can try the available natural, non-addictive natural botanicals to help you quit smoking. These have no side effects. Nicotine normally suppresses hunger and this type of suppression might have prevented your weight-gain.

Think positively about the benefits of giving up smoking and let them get implanted in your mind firmly. Some of the obvious benefits are, you will save substantial amount of mental clarity and your focus will be better. Plus, your anxiety and depression levels will decrease.

Also develop the habit of eating fresh fruits and vegetables with lots of fiber contents in them. Make juice of fruits a permanent part of your diet. The accumulated toxins within your body will soon decrease and with that your will to fight against smoking will increase.

The day is not far when you will join the non-smoker’s alley.

Smokers Really Want to Quit Smoking?

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

If you smoke, you know how difficult it is to Quit Smoking. Have you ever tried to quit smoking but you have failed because other people around you still smoke?

Several people try to quit smoking, but most fail. Most people when they quit smoking decide to try to quit. Through monitoring of their environment and adjusting their quitting techniques it is possible for people at all smoking levels to quit.

However, if the smoker makes the right decisions, understands them and can open their eyes to the truth about smoking and their smoking behaviour, it is possible for them to quit. Until now, drugs that purport to help you quit smoking have largely ignored the root of the problem Nicotine — the chemical that keeps you hooked to those insidious packs of cigarettes and unless you rid your body of that nasty chemical as quickly as possible the success of any Smoking Cessation treatment is reduced dramatically. As an ex-smoker and a former fatty (arguably!), I have found what I believe to be the solution to the problem. It is all to do with the decision. We may decide that we would like to quit smoking or that we would like to lose weight, but have we decided to commit to doing it?

Whatever kind of quit smoking approach or therapy you decide on, you should always seek professional advice from your doctor who will be able to prescribe for you the best medical treatment in accordance with your health conditions. When the smoker is finally able to quit smoking their trigger spots will still be there. A positive mental attitude to quitting smoking, coupled with a good understanding of why you really smoke will help any smoker quit the habit.

You can help you increase the chances of being successful during your effort to quit smoking by taking a walk or talking to a friend when you crave a cigarette . Research by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine has found that, on average, less than seven per cent of smokers who attempt to quit smoking on their own, are successful in being nicotine-free a year later. Given this similar rate of regular smoking at adulthood, women tend to smoke 2 cigarettes per day less than men, on average smoking 13 cigarettes compared to men smoking 15.

The postponing method means that every day, you delay the time you smoke your first cigarettes a little later until you can go through the whole day without smoking. If you follow the advice in this article then it should make quitting smoking a little easier, despite the fact that your friends and family smoke. “We affirm that environmental tobacco smoke is a significant public health risk to young children and that parents need to know about the risks of smoking in the home around their young children.

It was not until the 1950s that the dangers of smoking were firmly established but tobacco companies are now known to have gone out of their way to hide these facts from the public. Polls have shown that the vast majority of the population, smokers, ex-smokers and non-smokers alike all underestimate the dangers of both smoking and passive smoking. A vast majority of people who try to stop smoking find after a short period of time they resume the habit, many are unsuccessful simply because of the method they used to help them stop smoking.

In conjunction with the stop smoking tea provided to help people keep calm and reduce stress a reason many people give as to why they started smoking in the first place or why they are unable to stop. If you think this is a little morbid, why not do some research on famous smokers or people in the public eye who have died from smoking related illnesses?

If you really want to quit smoking, stop smoking tea is the best choice. You can quit smoking in 6 days without chemical side effects. Find out more information about it, make sure you click the link at resource box below.

Stop Smoking Aids For Smokers Who Want To Give Up Smoking!

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

There are a few free stop smoking aids: help lines, the smokers anonymous, or picking up simple hobbies. The help lines are run by trained counselors who can help very much the smoker who want to give up smoking. These lines help in different ways, by nicotine replacement therapy and help they choose the right one, or by recommending them laser therapy or drugs like Zyban.

Joining Smokers Anonymous can be very useful to those who want to give up smoking because these groups are being advised by those who have given up smoking, and it can be very helpful when the smoker is facing withdrawal symptoms. The smoker can also be helped by a family friend or a friend. No monetary value is involved because the family member (or the friend) wants to help the smoker hive up smoking, and he does that by spending hours (for example) with the smoker.

Picking up a simple hobby, like gardening or building scrapbooks keeps the individual occupied and reduces the urge to smoke. In consequence the smoker must learn to fill up hours with meaningful and engrossing activity, that is why it is important, the smoker picks an activity in which he is interested.

Other ways, the smoker can help himself by bringing discipline in his life, drinking a glass of water or fruit juice whenever the urge of smoke appears. Taking a few deep breaths and relaxing is a natural way to fight the urge of smoking.

A simple painless therapy is the laser treatment that uses a low intensity laser beam (called cold laser) to kill the smoking urge. Usually, it requires only a 20-30 minutes session to kill the smoking urge, but in some cases two or three sittings may be needed.

The therapy contains three stages, the first one where points that can reduce the dependence of the body on nicotine are activated, the second controls the appetite points so no extra weight is gained, and the last step stimulates the relaxation points to release endorphins.(this is a critical point to any treatment, because, the endorphins, which are produced by pituitary glands create a sense of false well-being and are present in large numbers in smokers).

The reason for which smokers experience emotional distress, anger, and the simple but phenomenal urge to light another cigar is that the endorphins register a sharp fall whenever someone tries to quit smoking. That is where laser treatment helps, by activating specific points in the body (ears, nose, hands, wrist, and forearm), and stimulating the natural release of synthesized endorphins.

Because of the given stimulation points, many doctors consider laser therapy to be similar to acupuncture Oriental science that uses needle to activate pressure points besides the fact that laser therapy uses low intensity laser beam.

Because of the advantages painless, no cuts or burns, and high success rate (80%-90%) more people tend to use this therapy every day. The only smokers who should not consider this treatment are pregnant women, cancer patients and epileptics.

In fact, it is said to be more addictive than cocaine and heroine, so it is quite normal for you body to long for it, to want it again and again and again. Still, you have to refuse to give in to the temptation. Learn to focus and to tell your mind (again) that you want to quit smoking.
